Jonathan renames UNILAG as Moshood Abiola University, Lagos *Bans continental dishes at national functions *To build a national museum *Nigeria to earn N214b from first cassava chips export

Abuja (WorldStage Newsonline-- The Federal Government on Tuesday finally granted national recognition to the presumed winner of the aborted 3rd Republic presidential election, late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola who died in custody in 1998, with the remaining of the University of Lagos (Unilag) after him.
President Goodluck Jonathan renamed the federal institution after the business mogul turned politician in his nationwide broadcast on the occasion marking Democracy Day.
M.K.O won the June 12 1993 presidential election declared as the best election ever held in the history of the country’s elections.
Jonathan also described May 29, 1999 as a turning point in the history of the country as it did not come by accident, stressing that many Nigerians laid down their lives for the transition to democracy to occur. Some were jailed. Media houses were attacked and shut down. But the people’s resolve was firm and unshakeable.
Jonathan recalled the martyrdom of Chief M. K. O. Abiola, whose presumed victory in the 1993 Presidential election, and death, while in custody, proved to be the catalyst for the people’s pro-democracy uprising.
He therefore noted that the greatest tribute that the nation can pay to him, and other departed heroes of Nigeria’s democracy, is to sustain and consolidate on democratic institutions and processes, and keep hope alive.
He said, “As we celebrate this year’s Democracy Day, I pay tribute to all the men and women who have made our democratic experience meaningful: the ordinary people who resisted military rule, and have remained resolute in their embrace of democracy; the army of Nigerian voters who, at every election season, troop out in large numbers to exercise their right of franchise; the change agents in civil society who have remained ever watchful and vigilant.”
Jonathan also paid tribute to all patriots who are the pillars of our collective journey, most especially, our armed forces who have steadfastly subordinated themselves to civil authority in the past 13 years. He said they have continued to demonstrate a great sense of professionalism.
He stressed that they had discharged their duties to the nation with honour and valour; adding that in a sub-region that had witnessed instances of political instability, authored by restless soldiers, the Nigerian Armed Forces had remained professional in their support of democracy.
He said, “I pay special tribute also to all patriots who are the pillars of our collective journey, most especially, our armed forces who have steadfastly subordinated themselves to civil authority in the past 13 years. They have continued to demonstrate a great sense of professionalism. They have discharged their duties to the nation with honour and valour. In a sub-region that has witnessed instances of political instability, authored by restless soldiers, the Nigerian Armed Forces have remained professional in their support of democracy.
“ When General Abdusalami Abubakar handed over the baton of authority to President Olusegun Obasanjo, in 1999, it was a turning point for Nigeria. We did not arrive at that turning point by accident. Many Nigerians laid down their lives for the transition to democracy to occur. Some were jailed. Media houses were attacked and shut down. But the people’s resolve was firm and unshakeable. This is what we remember. This is what we celebrate. On this day, I recall especially the martyrdom of Chief M. K. O. Abiola, whose presumed victory in the 1993 Presidential election, and death, while in custody, proved to be the catalyst for the people’s pro-democracy uprising. The greatest tribute that we can pay to him, and other departed heroes of Nigeria’s democracy, is to ensure that we continue to sustain and consolidate our democratic institutions and processes, and keep Hope alive.
“It is also in this regard that the Federal Government has decided that late Chief M.K.O. Abiola be honoured, for making the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of justice and truth. Destiny and circumstances conspired to place upon his shoulders a historic burden, and he rose to the occasion with character and courage. He deserves recognition for his martyrdom, and public-spiritedness and for being the man of history that he was. We need in our land, more men and women who will stand up to defend their beliefs, and whose example will further enrich our democracy. After very careful consideration, and in honour of Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s accomplishments and heroism, on this Democracy Day, the University of Lagos, is renamed by the Federal Government of Nigeria, Moshood Abiola University, Lagos. The Federal Government will also establish an Institute of Democratic Studies and Governance in the University.”
The President also admitted that the country is faced with challenges, but said government was “working hard to address them. And, by God’s grace, we will succeed. My confidence is bolstered by the results which we have achieved in different sectors within the last twelve months.”
He also took solace in the fact that the country democracy was stable, stressing that “its foundation is strong and firm. Its future is bright. Last year, I had spoken about the policy of 'one man one vote, one woman, one vote, one youth, one vote'. I am glad to see that the Nigerian people in all elections have continued to respect the principle of fair play. Since this administration came into office, we have gone to great lengths to strengthen our democratic institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission. There are still persons who believe that elections should be violent and unhealthy, but they are in the minority. They will not derail our democracy because the majority of Nigerians will not allow them to do so.
“Following the spate of violence, in some parts of the country, after the 2011 elections, our administration set up a committee on post-election violence to among other things, investigate the causes and nature of electoral violence and make appropriate recommendations. We will be guided by the White Paper, on that committee’s report, in dealing more firmly with electoral violence and fraud. This will include the establishment of Electoral Offences Tribunals to deal speedily with established cases of electoral violence. We cannot afford to treat the success we have recorded with our democratic experience with levity. Electoral reform is central to our administration’s transformation agenda. I urge all political parties to embrace this reform.”
He has also directed that a Presidential Museum be build in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. The Museum, which will document the lives and times of Nigeria’s Presidents and Heads of Government since 1960, to remind us of the high points of our national history.
The President also banned the serving of non-Nigerian dishes at all national functions henceforth to encourage the consummation of Nigeria's staple food.
The President also announced that the Federal Government had secured markets for cassava outside Nigeria, and for the first time ever, Nigeria will export this year one million metric tons of dried cassava chips to China. "This will earn Nigeria 136 million US dollars (about N214 billion) in foreign exchange.
He said his Government had revived and now accelerating the completion of the National Integrated Power Projects. It is also building about 4000km of transmission lines and hundreds of substations and has completed the design for the construction of both Mambilla and Zungeru Hydro power plants which will add about 3,000 MW to the national grid".
He also said that the country had made progress, but can still do a lot more, with an assurance of doing so.
The economy, the President also said is doing well, noting that the country’s economic outlook is positive.
As according to him, “Today, progress has been made. The country’s credit rating is positive, in contrast with many nations being downgraded. In 2011, our economy grew by 7.45%. As at mid-May 2012, our foreign exchange reserves had risen to $37.02 billion, the highest level in 21 months. We have stabilized and improved our fiscal regime. We brought the fiscal deficit down to 2. 85% of GDP from 2.9% in 2011. We reduced recurrent expenditures from 74% to 71% and reduced domestic borrowing from N852 billion in 2011 to N744 billion in 2012. We cut out over N100 billion of non-essential expenditure and increased our internally generated revenue from N200 billion to N467 billion.
“For the first time in over a decade, we now have a draft Trade Policy which provides a multi-dimensional framework to boost our trade regime and facilitate the inflow of investments. We have generated over N6.6 trillion worth of investment commitments. The total value of our trade is also much higher than the value estimated the previous year due to deliberate government policies. To facilitate the ease of doing business in Nigeria, we have a policy in place to make visa procurement easier for foreign investors, with safeguards to prevent abuse.”
He also noted that the goal of “our administration is to ensure that every Nigerian can find gainful employment. Given my dissatisfaction with the prevailing unemployment situation in the country, our administration has embarked on an ambitious strategy of creating jobs and job-creators through the launch of several initiatives mainly targeted at the youths and women.”
On the international scene he said, “Our successful elections, last year, opened new vistas for Nigeria’s foreign policy. More than ever before, Nigeria’s achievements have generated a lot of international goodwill and recognition. We have continued to build on this by further showing leadership in the sub-region and the African continent. Under my watch as Chairman of the sub-regional body, ECOWAS, and subsequently, Nigeria was in the forefront of the efforts to ensure democratic stability in Niger, Mali, Guinea Bissau, and particularly at a critical moment in Cote d’Ivoire. Our foreign policy process has proven to be dynamic and pro-active. Nigeria’s place is secure among many friends in the comity of nations. We are building on that friendship to open up opportunities for foreign investments in the Nigerian economy and to provide necessary support for the vibrant community of Nigerians in the Diaspora.
“ We will continue to work hard, to turn domestic successes into a source of motivation for greater achievements in the international arena. We are fully aware that it is only when our people are happy and confident that they would be in a good position to walk tall in relating with others.”

Nigerian appointed as the first black police commander in London

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian and a Chief Superintendent with the London Metropolitan Police, Mr. Victor Olisa, has been appointed as the first black commander for Bexley local council in London.

“Policing runs in the family and I have always wanted to be a police officer and ethnicity does not affect that” Olisa told the Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in his reaction on the appointment in London.
The governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole on Monday, denied reports that he impregnated a 16- year old girl.

A Lagos-based soft-sell Magazine – News of the People Magazine, published by Dockland Communications Limited, had last year published a story alleging that the governor was dating an under-age girl and had gotten her pregnant.
Mr Oshiomhole subsequently sued Dockland Communications Limited for libel, asking for an N250 million as damages for the publication.
At the resumed hearing of the case, with suit No B/556/2011, between Mr Oshiomhole and Dockland Communications Limited, the governor alleged that the content of the publication had maligned him.
He said that it had also caused him and his family great trauma.
The said publication on its front page and page 19 respectively, had as its titles, “Oshiomhole Sex Power Exposed: Impregnates Young Girl Six Months After Death of Wife”.
Mr Oshiomhole, in his claims, told the court presided over by Justice Efe Ikpomwonba that the said publication, among other allegations, stated that that he also bought a jeep for the girl and that he was also interfering in the decisions of authorities at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, because of the girl.
He claimed that the publication alleged that he used Viagra during the alleged intercourse with the girl.
He further accused the publication of reporting that he had fixed the date of his traditional marriage to the said girl to coincide with the preparations of one of his daughter’s wedding.
Mr Oshiomhole said he was demanding for damages because the publication had caused him and his children serious psychological trauma, only six months after the death of his wife.
The governor added that the publication also alleged that he had marathon sex with a female partner in Lagos who fainted under him.
The plaintiff testified that he could not have been preparing for a second marriage just six-months after his wife’s death.
The judge, thereafter, adjourned the case to June 25, for further hearing.

Will Smith Slaps Reporter who tried to kiss him! - HipHollywood.com

Will Smith, as seen in a video at the Moscow premiere of "Men in Black III,"  dealt a shove, an annoyed expression and a backhand slap to a Ukrainian reporter who seemed intent on enveloping the actor in his arms.

Three steps farther along the red carpet, as the TMZ video shows, Smith's sunny smile was back on his face. He seemed to be making an effort to shake off the heebie jeebies from the extremely affectionate reporter.

The reporter, Vitalii Sediuk, may have a weakness for celebrities. According to Forbes magazine, he presented Madonna with a bouquet of purple hydrangeas last fall.  She wasn't thrilled, saying she "loathed" hydrangeas.

Given the choice, Smith likely would have preferred the flowers.

But Smith hasn't let last Friday's kerfuffle mar his promotion of the new "Men in Black," in which he teams again with Tommy Lee Jones, with Josh Brolin along for the ride. The film is set to open on Friday.

Earlier last week, Smith also attended the premiere of the film in London.  In a BBC interview, he talked about the film and aliens, and about the possibility that he could play President Obama on film -- an idea that Smith welcomed.

Noting that Smith is known for his good humor and sense of fun, the BBC reporter asked what irritates him, what is his "bugbear"?

Smith likely taped the interview before Friday's encounter with Sediuk, or his answer might have been: reporters with wandering lips.

Two Housewives Set Suspected Husbands' Lovers Ablaze

In Ebonyi state, first wives demonstrate their anger against their husbands for taking second wives by setting the ‘intruders’ ablaze, and making sure they are burnt to death.

Women are generally cast in the mold of meek, compassionate and in fact weaker vessels when it comes to emotional issues and tasks requiring practical display of energy. But that gentle and fragile mien pales into insignificance when it comes to defending their territory in matters of love and matrimonial relationships.

Even the Holy Bible warns of the fury of an injured and jealous woman, which is comparable to a tempestuous and destructive storm.

In less than one year, Ebonyi has been hit twice by the tragedy of crime of passion committed by jealous first wives against those they suspected had any love dealing with their husbands. The first wives descended with fury to their suspected husbands’ lovers and the suspects are not alive to tell their stories.

The most recent tragic event occurred two weeks ago at Akpoha community in Afikpo North local government area of the state, when a house wife simply identified as Ogeri allegedly set her husband’s lover ablaze.

The fire burnt the co- wife to death. Tragically too, when the alleged offender was arrested by the police, her one-year-old child died probably out of shock. Ogeri’s husband, Mr. UroObasi, a commercial motor cycle operator was also arrested.

The victim of the recent Akpoha tragedy, a 22 year-old girl, whose name was given as Miss Felicia hailed from Igbo in Abi local government area of Cross River State. It is not yet clear if she was ever married to Obasi, as the first wife is claiming.

The marriage theory appears to have crashed when family members described it as false, baseless and misleading. Rather, they said that Felicia came to the Apostolic Church Akpoha to seek solutions to her numerous personal and psychological problems and had on arrival, requested Obasi, a member of the same church, to assist her secure accommodation, and even provide her with food items.

Newsmen gathered that instead of getting accommodation for Felicia in a different location in the town, Obasi asked her to move into his matrimonial home. Thereafter, he reportedly explained to his mother Mrs. Virginia Oko, and his wife that Felicia was stranded and he decided to assist her by bringing her to their matrimonial home.

Apparently, his wife didn’t believe the story. She was said to have interpreted her husband’s kind gesture towards a visitor “in dire need of assistance” to mean a veiled arrangement to take a second wife.

And filled with fury over her husband’s action, Ogeri, according to an eye witness, emptied two litres of petrol through the back window of a room occupied by Ogeri at about 11am while she was asleep, and discreetly set the room ablaze.

When the fire started, the cry of the victim attracted neighbours, who broke the door before she ran out stark naked with fire all over her body. The neighbours could not save Felicia’s life as she died on the way to the hospital.

Nwaokpuru a neighbour living close to where the incident happened said: “I was in my room one night when I heard someone shouting Jesus …Jesus…Jesus… I quickly rushed out to see what was happening though before then the whole place had been covered by smoke … I saw someone, a woman, run out of the room, still shouting Jesus…Jesus…Jesus…and she happened to be Felicia”.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State Police Command, Mr. John UkieEluu, an assistant superintendent of police confirmed the incident to Newsmen.

He described the incident as a homicide case, adding that it had been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID. “I can’t say precisely whether the suspect has been charged to court or not, but I know it will be handled expeditiously,” he said.

People do say Women are Devil but I never believe it. Now, I didn't just believe It is Confirmed! Should Men Married with all these?

Why do people carry so many handset at a time

It is always difficult for me to carry more than one handset at a time.
Good enough, some phones now have double sim, making easier for
for us to have two lines on one phone.

But You still see people carrying 5 to 10 handsets, struggling with them.
I got more worried when i saw this WOMAN carrying 5 phones,
I though it is only the ibo guys at Alaba market that are guilty of this but...........

So how many phones can u carry at a go?

Try 28 millimeters in diameter each, or the size of this Cartier watch face, or this German coin, or this insanely large Australian raspberry.

At the wedding ceremony, attended by 40 of her friends, Nadine read her vows: “I, Nadine, promise to enjoy inhabiting my own life and to relish a lifelong love affair with my beautiful self” and presented herself with a ring and invited all guests to “blow kisses to the whole world”.  According to Schweigert, who works at Swanson’s Health and teaches yoga “I have never been happier…I married myself to celebrate the progress I have made in life after being divorced 6years ago.”

“I was waiting for someone to come along and make me happy,” she says. “At some point, a friend said, ‘Why do you need someone to marry you to be happy? Marry yourself.’”
When Schweigert first mentioned the idea a year ago, she was discouraged by several female friends who thought it was weird but when the idea resurfaced some months ago she embraced it “It was just one of those things where you get an idea, and you know you just have to do it…and this time my friends backed me up…two friends baked cakes, another friend officiated and many others presented readings.”
So far, Nadine enjoys spending time with herself, going out on date nights, buying treats and gifts for herself, and says she’s no longer waiting for “someone to complete her.”

Boy who touched Obama’s hair: Story behind White House photo is probably in your inbox

The story behind a photograph showing a 5-year-old black boy touching President Obama's hair may be coming to your inbox soon.

In May 2009, the child, Jacob Philadelphia, was visiting the White House with his father, a former Marine who was leaving his 2-year stint working for the National Security Council as part of the White House staff. The father asked to take a family photo with the president. Jacob said he had a question for Obama, who was then in his fifth month in office.
The Times recounts the rest:
"I want to know if my hair is just like yours," he told Mr. Obama, so quietly that the president asked him to speak again.
Jacob did, and Mr. Obama replied, "Why don't you touch it and see for yourself?" He lowered his head, level with Jacob, who hesitated.
"Touch it, dude!" Mr. Obama said.
As Jacob patted the presidential crown, ... [White House photographer Pete] Souza snapped.
"So, what do you think?" Mr. Obama asked.
"Yes, it does feel the same," Jacob said.

As the paper noted, President Obama has largely avoided discussing race during his first term. But the photo "is tangible evidence" that the president "remains a potent symbol for blacks, with a deep reservoir of support."
"As a photographer, you know when you have a unique moment," Souza told the Times. "But I didn't realize the extent to which this one would take on a life of its own. That one became an instant favorite of the staff. I think people are struck by the fact that the president of the United States was willing to bend down and let a little boy feel his head."

Australian Is World’s Richest Woman

According to AFP, a preview of the respected BRW Rich 200 list, published Wednesday, put the mining tycoon’s personal fortune at Aus$29.17 billion (US$28.48 billion), a figure that sees her outstrip Walton for the first time.

In March, Forbes placed Walton and her family’s net worth at US$25.3 billion, while Rinehart’s fortune stood at US$18 billion.

BRW rich list editor Andrew Heathcote said mining magnate Rinehart had almost tripled her wealth in 12 months as commodity prices rose and she pulled off two deals in iron ore and coal.

“The Aus$18.87 billion increase in her wealth is unparalleled. It is a product of foreign investment in new projects, increased production and a recovery in the iron ore price over the past six months,” said Heathcote.

Rinehart, 58, heiress to an iron ore prospecting empire built in Australia’s resources-rich west, is a controversial figure who stridently campaigned against new mining taxes and recently bought up big in the media sector.

She is also locked in a series of lawsuits, including an acrimonious row with her own children over a family trust where she has been accused of threatening to financially ruin them.

Heathcote said Rinehart was on track to overtake Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim — worth US$69 billion — as the world’s richest person as demand ramps up for Australia’s natural resources.

“A $100 billion fortune is not out of the question for Rinehart if the resources boom continues unabated,” said Heathcote.

“There is a real possibility that Rinehart will become not just the richest woman in the world but the richest person in the world.”

The full BRW list of Australia’s richest people, the upper rungs of which are usually dominated by mining tycoons, will be unveiled on Thursday.

The CBN is contemplating the introduction of new currency denominations of N2,000 and N5,000 notes and N5, N10, N20 and N50 coins.
“The top management of the CBN have decided to introduce currency denominations of N2,000 and N5,000. This is being done in the best interest of the economy.”
“All the smaller denominations from the N50 downwards are also to be converted into coins.”
A financial expert and executive chairman of the Society for Analytical Economics, Nigeria, Dr. Godwin Owoh, has said that if the policy is carried out, it would not only lead to inflation but would increase the ability to carry out cash transactions.
He said the activities of the CBN were becoming more commercial in nature, suggesting that this was more of a fiscal policy than a monetary one and that it should be decided by either the minster of finance or the president.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg marries longtime girlfriend

Facebook co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg married longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan on Saturday.

The news was announced (where else?) on Facebook, just one day after the company went public.

Zuckerberg, 28, posted a simple wedding photograph, showing the couple against a backdrop of plants and small lights on a string.

Both he and Chan also updated their relationship status to "married."
He ditched his trademark hoodie, appearing in a dark suit and tie, while she wore a sleeveless white wedding dress with lace.

Zuckerberg and Chan met during his sophomore year at Harvard University, where Zuckerberg first nursed Facebook as a dorm-room project.

Chan graduated this year from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, according to her Facebook page.

The marriage comes just one day after the company, based in California, made its market debut.

Its initial public offering was the biggest opening ever for a tech company and the third-largest IPO in U.S. history, behind only Visa and General Motors.
