Father remanded for killing 41-day-old son

An Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, on Thursday remanded in Ikoyi Prison a 34-year-old bricklayer, Abiodun Otaoroju, for allegedly killing his 41-day-old son.

The defendant is facing a two-count of murder and administering obnoxious substance.

His plea was, however, not taken as the court has no jurisdiction to try such case.

“I hereby remand the defendant at the Ikoyi Prison, pending the outcome of the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions,” Magistrate Helen Omisore said.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Idowu Onime, had told the court that the defendant, on August 30, unlawfully killed his son, Kazeem.

He said, “The defendant used an obnoxious substance known as ‘Bint El Sudan Perfume’ to kill the deceased.

“The defendant, who lives at 16, Aiyegbami Street, Ibeju Lekki in Lagos, was arrested by the police after the mother of the baby cried out to the neighbourhood for help.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the alleged incident, which took place in Epe, in Lagos State, contravened sections 221 and 241 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

Omisore adjourned the case to October 31, for the DPP’s advice.

Earlier, the accused had told reporters that, “I met Ronke in 2011. She’s a fashion designer. We later fell in love and early this year, she got pregnant. I went to meet her father and told him I wanted to marry her and he accepted.

“I have another wife and have three children. But I didn’t marry Ronke but I provided for her and made sure she was alright. In June, she gave birth to Kazeem and we had christening.

“I don’t live with them but I usually spend the weekend with them. On August 30, during one of my visits, I sent Ronke to buy bread and make me some tea. She left the baby with me.”

Otaoroju said when Ronke went out, he started hearing strange voices in his head commanding him to kill his child.

He said, “I went outside and bought a liquid substance known as Bint El Sudan, it’s a type of perfume.

“I took the substance, opened Kazeem’s mouth and poured it into it. I don’t know why I did that.”

Lagos Targets Guinness Book - 300,000 to Brush Teeth Simultaneously

Lagos State government, Wednesday, said over 300, 000 persons will simultaneously compete in the Lagos World Record Tooth Brushing Challenge in December, aimed at creating a new Guinness Book of Records in tooth brushing across the world.

The state government also said preventive dental health care department will be established in the entire Primary Health Care, PHCs, in the state.

Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Dr. Yewande Adeshina, who disclosed this, at a world press conference held yesterday at the World Oral Day, said that the project will commence with the establishment of two centres next month.

The current record of 177, 003 in tooth brush challenge was set by India in 2007. Adeshina said; "The toothbrush challenge programme tagged 'Do not wait: address your future now,' is not just solely aimed on shattering the world record on December 5 alone, but the challenge will also provide vital information for future research baseline on oral health planning in the state."

Some Weird Entries In This Year's Guinness Book Of Record (PHOTOS)

It’s been a record-breaking summer thanks to the incredible efforts of our athletes. But even the likes of Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis would struggle to compete with some of the entries in the latest Guinness Book of World Records.

Among the wacky wonders to find a place in the 2013 edition is Popeye lookalike Moustafa Ismail and his monstrous biceps, and a man with the tallest mohican hairstyle, measuring a towering 3ft 8in.

It’s not just humans either, with all creatures great and small snatching a few records — from a mighty Great Dane to a teeny bull.

Biggest biceps: Popeye lookalike Moustafa Ismail, 24, from Massachusetts, has spent ten years
pumping iron twice a day to get his 31in biceps. He eats lots of chicken rather than spinach – which he hates

The 57th version of best-selling reference book also features new verified entries for the world’s heaviest sportswoman and the most conquests of Mount Everest, as well as the tallest ever dog.

Being published in 22 languages in more than 100 countries, the 2013 Guinness World Records is expected to sell around 2.7 million copies and documents numerous new extremes relating to the human body.

These include 86-year-old Johanna Quaas, a retired PE teacher from Leipzig, Germany, who is named the oldest gymnast; Egyptian-born Moustafa Ismail, recognised for having the largest ‘guns’ – biceps and triceps – with a circumference of 25.5in; and London-based sumo wrestler Sharran

Alexander, who weighs 203.21 kg (32 stone), who was named the world’s heaviest sportswoman. Bodybuilder Mr Ismail, now living in Franklin, Massachusetts, has arms with a greater circumference than the average human head.

Biggest horse: Big Jake, a nine-year-old Belgian gelding, from Winsconsin, U.S., tops 20 hands – or almost 7ft

Tallest dog: Three-year-old Great Dane Zeus and his owner Denise Doorlag in Michigan.
On his hind legs, he towers over her at 7ft 4in

The 24-year-old, originally from Alexandria, Egypt, hopes his record-breaking status will be a springboard to become a professional body-builder. Among the new edition’s animal-based records are new bests for the shortest bull and the tallest dog, a Great Dane measuring 44in from foot to withers.

Tallest mohican: Japanese designer Kazuhiro Watanabe’s spear-like hairdo
peaks at more than 3ft 8in, thanks to three cans of hairspray and a large bottle of gel

Other records in the 57th edition of the book include the lowest roadworthy car – a vehiclecreated by students and teachers in Asakuchi, Japan, which measures 45.2cm (17.79in) from the ground to its highest part.

The City Montessori School in Lucknow, India, also enters the new edition, with a record enrolment of 39,437 pupils for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Chris Oyakhilome Builds Self-Appraisal Billboard With Church Tithe and Offering

So much for humility. I wonder what the message of the billboard is, and this was built with the offering and tithe contributed to the church, If i talk now, people will say edo this edo that, but why are you promoting yourself when you are meant to be a SERVANT of God? This is what we cry against in our everyday government, not it is creeping into the churches, what next? Sheiks buying yatchs and private jets?

Microsoft Re-brands, Introduces Brand New Logo (What do you think?)

For the first time in 25 years, Microsoft has a new corporate logo.

From the story running in today’s Seattle Times:

Microsoft, which has used its solid, boldfaced, italicized logo since 1987, is expected to unveil its new, more colorful logo Thursday at the Boston opening of the 23rd Microsoft store. It will also appear Thursday at the Seattle and Bellevue Microsoft stores, as well as on the microsoft.com home page. The new logo, which incorporates a multicolored Windows symbol in addition to the “Microsoft” name in straightforward, lighter type, is intended to “signal the heritage but also signal the future — a newness and freshness,” said Jeff Hansen, Microsoft’s general manager of brand strategy.

It’s coming at a time when the company is preparing to launch new or significantly updated versions of nearly every one of its products, from Windows to Windows Phone to Office.

Many of those products will feature a new look and feel — cleaner, with fewer borders and less clutter, and more colorful tile-based designs.

Given all that, “we felt it was a good time to express the newness in the Microsoft logo as well,” Hansen said.

Woman kills and eats her two sons – ‘I thought they were pigs’

A mum butchered and ate her two young sons because she hallucinated and thought they were Pigs.

The Thai woman allegedly cooked and ate her children, aged one and five, and was found by police sleeping in her home surrounded by their body parts.

The woman, a member of a hill tribe from the mountainous region of Chiang Main near the Burmese border, had been suffering from mental illness since 2007 but had recently stopped taking her medication.

She had been left alone with her sons as her husband left for a few days to get her medication.

He said: “I had to go out of town for a couple of days. I told her that I would bring back the medication she needs.

“I never imagined that something like this would happen.”

Dr Kiattiphum Wongrachit from the Mental Health Department said: “The woman killed her children because she didn’t continue her treatment and didn’t take her medication.”

He added that it is believed that in her hallucinogenic state she thought her children were pigs and that she has yet to realise that she killed her children.

A hospital report from her treatment in 2007 stated that the woman suffered from hallucinations and believed someone was coming to hurt her.
The woman, whose name has not been released for her family’s protection, has been charged with murder, although details of the charge have yet to be released.

She has been deemed mentally unfit to fight her case and has been sent to Suan Prung Psychiatric Hospital in Chiang Mai for treatment.

56,350 people living with AIDS in Cross River – SACA DG

56,350 people living with AIDS in Cross River – SACA DG.

Calabar – The Director-General of the Cross River State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (SACA), Mrs Irene Aniyom, says that 56,350 persons in the state are currently living with the HIV virus.

Aniyom made the announcement in an interview with journalists on Tuesday in Calabar.

“Today in the state, we have 56,350 people living with the virus; we have to update it on a regular basis since 2005,” she said.

According to her, the infected persons are receiving anti-retroviral drugs at different centres in the state.

She said that SACA had formed a group known as “Cross River Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS,’’ to monitor the infected persons.

“And in this network, we have 80 support groups of people living with the virus, with a minimum of 25 persons in each group,’’ she said.

Aniyom said that many people were now aware of the diseases, due to the activities of SACA and other groups involved in the campaign against the spread of the disease.

“If you go to various HIV testing and counselling centres across the state, you will find many people coming out to know their status,’’  she said.

The director-general said that SACA had also established Local Action Committees on Control of HIV/AIDS (LACA) in each of the 18 Local Government Areas in the state, headed by the chairmen of the councils.

“This is because we found out that the disease spreads faster in rural areas, ‘’ Aniyom said.

She said that the monitoring and evaluation unit of the agency conducted regular monitoring of the activities of LACA and collated data on their activities.

“Also, chairmen of the Local Government Areas pay N200,000 to their LACA every month to facilitate their activities.

“While on our part we give them N3,000 monthly to fuel to facilitate mobility in their campaigns,’’ she said.

She said that the agency had also identified faith-based organisations to assist SACA in carrying out campaigns in churches and mosques in the state.

According to her, SACA is  also collaborating with the state’s ministry of education to carry out HIV/AIDS campaigns in schools.

“It is on record that Cross River was the first state in Nigeria to develop “Family Life HIV/AIDS Curriculum’’ in every school and students write examination on the subject.

“So in Cross River today, pupils and students in both primary and secondary schools discuss HIV/AIDS comfortably. And this has helped in reducing the spread of the virus,’’ she said. (NAN

Baby factory uncovered in Delta

Baby factory uncovered in Delta!

From PAUL OSUYI, Asaba

A maternity where newborn babies are sold to wealthy couples has been discovered in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The police in collaboration with local vigilance group recently raided the storey building located in Oduke, a sparsely populated area of Okwe community in the metropolis.

Three pregnant women and a suspected member of the syndicate were apprehended during the raid.

The Delta State Police Command spokesman, DSP Charles Muka, who confirmed the arrest, did not give further details.

Muka said: “We have three pregnant women and an advanced woman in our custody, they are at the Area Command.”

He added that the matter was still under investigation.

Investigation by the Daily Sun however revealed that the racket had been going on for some years at the maternity (name withheld), which was formerly managed by a medical doctor, who was said to have died in a motor accident.

The new managers were said to have turned the facility into a haven of the illicit trade, disguising it as a maternity to cover their track from the prying eyes of the public.

It was gathered that unmarried but pregnant young ladies who had been jilted by their lovers found solace in the hands of the managers of the maternity who lured them with a promise of N50,000 after giving birth to the baby.

“The expectant mothers are closely monitored by the supervisors so that they will not escape from the custody. They give them (pregnant girls) daily meals and nurses come here to give them ante-natal care,” a source said.

“We were surprised that such a thing was going on here. We thought it was just a maternity where medical attention is given to pregnant women until the police came here last weekend to expose the illicit trade,” he added.

Besides, another source said the maternity “is host to all sorts of men who come there under the cover of night to have free and unprotected sex with the pregnant ladies, apparently to nurture the foetus.

And after giving birth, the ladies are allowed to go back to re-unite with the larger society with the N50,000 gratification.

The baby racketeering syndicate, it was learnt, had network with a doctor based in Upper Iweka, Onitsha in Anambra State, whose duty was to distribute the babies to potential buyers at the rate of N250,000, irrespective of the baby’s sex.

Somalia Olympic Runner Drowns In Sea While Trying To Get To Europe

A Somali Olympic athlete has reportedly drowned while attempting to reach Europe on a migrant boat. Runner Samia Yusuf Omar was trying to cross from Libya to Italy in April when the boat she was travelling in sank, according to Italian media.

The head of Somalia's National Olympic Committee confirmed to the BBC that she had died but did not say how.

Samia competed in the 200m event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 despite having almost no formal training.

Although she came in last place, several seconds behind the other competitors, BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome says it is extraordinary that she was able to take part at all.

She had grown up and trained in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, facing war, poverty, a complete lack of athletics facilities and prejudice from some quarters against women participating in sports.

According to a profile of Samia on al-Jazeera, she faced death threats and intimidation when she returned to Somalia after the 2008 Olympics, with the Islamist militia al-Shabab controlling parts of the capital.

In October 2010, the runner is reported to have moved to Ethiopia in search of a coach to help her train for the London 2012 Olympics. What happened between then and her apparent death in the Mediterranean Sea is unclear.

According to al-Jazeera, there were no guarantees that she would be accepted to train at the stadium in Addis Ababa - it was dependent on her running times and permission from the Ethiopian Athletics Federation.

Reports in Italian media suggest she may have been hoping to find a coach in Europe who could help her reach the London Olympics.

Italian newspaper Corriere Della Serra says Samia's fate only came to light when former Somali Olympic athlete Abdi Bile brought it up at a talk.

He mentioned Mo Farah, the Somalian runner who moved to the United Kingdom aged 12 and triumphed in this year's Olympics.

Quote
"We are happy for Mo - he is our pride", he said. "But we will not forget Samia".

24 Years Old Cynthia Osokogu Was Killed By Her Facebook Friends In Lagos

Some new information has been revealed with regards to the murder of 24 year old Cynthia Osokogu daughter of RTD Major General Frank Osokogu. Here is how Bela Naija is reporting the incident:

Quote
24 Year Old Cynthia Osokogu left Abuja in late July 2012 (According to reports, on the 22nd of July 2012). Like many enterprising young people, the post-graduate student of Nasarawa State University was a clothing retailer and had travelled to Lagos to purchase new stock.

Cynthia had been chatting with some new “friends” on Facebook for a few months. In the course of their conversations, they developed a friendship and a level of trust. These young men were also university students, they seemed normal and promised to host Cynthia when she came to Lagos.

There is speculation that they paid for her plane ticket and promised to pay for her hotel as well. Only Cynthia knows if this is true. Whatever the truth is, Cynthia trusted her new friends and had no idea that they had sinister plans.
What we know is that, these 2 young men picked Cynthia up from the airport in Lagos and drove her to a hotel in Festac. At the hotel, they tied her up, robbed her of all the money she brought to shop for her business and strangled her to death.

They then left the hotel and quickly deleted her from their facebook friend list to remove any trace of their connection.
The hotel found her body and since her ID cards and mobile phone had been stolen, they could not identify her or call friends and family.
Her body was deposited in a morgue in Lagos.
All this time, her family and friends were praying for her safe return.

How the Killers Were Caught
At some point, one of the culprits accidentally answered Cynthia’s phone and the call was traced to Festac. Therefore, her missing person’s police report was submitted to the Area E Command in Festac. This enabled her family to find her body in the morgue and also led them to the hotel.

Using CCTV from the hotel, the killers were identified. According to reports, these two young men are university students who have now confessed that they killed Cynthia and she is their sixth victim – the gang reportedly specializes in luring unsuspecting young women, robbing them of their possessions before killing them. Though there is speculation that their motive was ritualistic, it appears that it was greed and their main goal was to rob and kill. The pharmacist who supplied the drugs used on Cynthia and hotel staff have also been arrested. According to Police spokesperson Ngozi Braide, “Six people were arrested on Sunday over the incident and investigations are ongoing”.

As you can see, Cynthia is one of Nigeria's numerous social media generation girls (with BB and a facebook account), this unfortunately led to her demise. It is a warning that no matter how bored you are, you should learn to stay off facebook, ofcourse boredom is the number 1 reason why many people join facebook anyway.

Goodluck in life!

Frozen Foods Truck Crashes On Cab kills driver

AS an eyewitness at the scene of late Friday night’s auto crash puts it, “it was a real… real close shave with death” for the taxi driver, Mr. Benjamin Ademuyiwa and his passenger.

The passenger, a middle- aged man, had hired Ademuyiwa’s Nissan Sunny Saloon car (registration number, XR 05 EPE), at the Ajao Estate Taxi Park, near the popular 7/8 Bus Stop, Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road. But the journey had barely started when the customer asked him to pull over so he could use an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) belonging to the Zenith Bank.

No sooner had he pulled in front of the bank, away from the traffic, than a Mercedes truck (registration number XB 368 LAR) fell on the cab, with Ademuyiwa escaping death by the whiskers.

Although, the cab appeared to be facing the wrong direction, it was clearly parked off the road. The driver, reportedly, had reclined backwards on the seat as he awaited his passenger’s return.

The driver of the truck, laden with frozen fish, was said to have lost control after one of the front tyres burst.  He reportedly sustained injuries and was taken to the Kupa Medical Centre, Ajao Estate, and later to a military hospital at Oshodi by relatives.

Although the accident occurred late Friday night, the lorry had already been evacuated as at 7am yesterday when The Guardian visited the scene.

Ademuyiwa appeared dazed yesterday. His colleagues at the Ajao Estate Taxi Park said the matter has been reported to the police.

“He said he never saw it coming, as he relaxed in the vehicle, waiting for the passenger. In fact, he actually thought it was a Boko Haram bomb,” said a colleague, on behalf Ademuyiwa, who though present, remained speechless.

Efforts to encourage a shocked Ademuyiwa to give a personal account of the incident failed.

Clifford Orji dies in Kirikiri Prison

Alleged cannibal and 12 years inmate of Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Clifford Orji, has died of unknown causes.
Prison authorities said Orji died Friday morning and the cause of death is unknown; but an autopsy is being performed.
The PUNCH had reported on April 13, 2012, that Orji’s health was deteriorating due to the refusal of psychiatric hospitals to take him in.
The Deputy Comptroller of the prison, Mr. Noel Ailewon, had said Orji was in a bad state and had gone completely mad.
“Orji’s health is getting worse. He has gone completely mad, vomiting and even defecating without restraint and is naked most of the time” he said
The Director of Office of the Public Defender, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, had said during a visit to evaluate the number of Awaiting Trial Persons that following a court order, Orji was taken to two Psychiatric hospitals for treatment but had been rejected.
“Initially, we took Orji to Yaba Psychiatric Hospital but was rejected because they claimed they did not have long-term medical facilities. Subsequently, he was taken to another hospital in Ewekoro but was similarly rejected” she said.
It was learnt that due to this challenge, Orji, who was 46-years-old, could not stand trial in court.
The Attorney-General of the state, Mr. Ade Ipaye, had said Orji’s case was stalled due to the impediments, adding that unless Orji received proper medical attention, he would not stand trial.
“Orji is mentally disturbed and no hospital is accepting him. Unfortunately, one cannot be tried mentally stable, so, he’s stuck in the middle. All we can do now is find help for him” he said.
Orji was arrested in February 1999 by the police under the bridge along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway. He was subsequently charged before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court on 19 February but was never tried.
The acting Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Prison command, Mr. Biyi Jeje, confirmed Orji’s death to our correspondent on the telephone.
“As at Thursday, Orji was fine but on Friday morning, he died in his sleep. The cause of his death is still unknown but an autopsy is being performed,” he said.
Jeje confirmed that Orji was rejected by many mental health facilities in the country and maintained that the prisons authorities did all it could to manage his illness.
“We took Orji to many health facilities but he was rejected time and time again. I don’t know why they rejected him but we did all we could to manage his illness”, he said

Seven Cameroonian Athlethes "Varnish" From Olympic Village In London

Remember we were once told about the 'disappearance' of Cameroon's women's reserve goalkeeper from the 2012 London Olympics, six more athletes from Cameroon have also 'disappeared' from the olympics, including five boxers and a swimmer.

Via BBC
The seven, including five boxers, are suspected of having decided to stay in Europe for economic reasons, Reuters news agency reports. A reserve goalkeeper for the women's soccer team, Drusille Ngako, was the first to disappear, the agency quoted Cameroon's Olympic mission as saying.

In June, an Ethiopian torchbearer, Natnael Yemane, 15, also disappeared. He went missing from a hotel in Nottingham.

Quote
"What began as rumour has finally turned out to be true," Team Cameroon mission head David Ojong said, in a letter sent to the Cameroonian sports ministry. "Seven Cameroonian athletes who participated at the 2012 London Olympic Games have disappeared from the Olympic Village." Ngako was the first to disappear while her teammates left for Coventry for their last preparatory encounter against New Zealand, he said.

Her disappearance was followed by that of swimmer Paul Ekane Edingue and five boxers eliminated from the games. Thomas Essomba, Christian Donfack Adjoufack, Abdon Mewoli, Blaise Yepmou Mendouo and Serge Ambomo, disappeared on Sunday from the Olympic village, Mr Ojong said.

Tragedy struck at 8, Amosu Street, Ijegun, Lagos, on Sunday as a woman identified simply as Iya Anu, allegedly beat her foster son, Seubow, to death for allegedly stealing N50.

It was learnt that Iya Anu, a mother of four, usually inflicted injuries on Seubow, her husband’s nephew and her children whenever they erred.

Trouble started when 16-year-old Seubow misplaced a N1, 000 note given to him for an errand on Saturday.

The development, it was learnt, irked Iya Anu who starved the teenager throughout Saturday. When Seubow could no longer bear the hunger, he sneaked out of the house at night to buy Gala.

When Iya Anu knew about it, our correspondent learnt that she became furious, accused him of stealing her N50 and gave the teenager the beating of his life.

A neighbour who identified herself simply as Balikis said the accused must have used a hot object to batter the boy as his body was full of burns.

She said, “Iya Anu began to beat him on Saturday night. The beating continued till about 9am on Sunday when her husband and the other children had left for church.

“She battered him till he gave up the ghost about noon.  When she realised that the boy had lost consciousness, she cried for help but it was already late.  At a point, she wanted to run away but she was promptly rounded up.”

Another resident, Modinatu, said Iya Anu, had in June battered the boy resulting in her being invited to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division for questioning.

She said, “Seubow joined them in December 2011 and this woman has made life so unbearable for him just the way she does to her children too. In June, the boy was battered to the extent that she was quizzed by the police.

“Also, she has in the name of discipline used a knife to injure her first daughter, Anu, on her shoulders over issues bordering on misdemeanour.

“She is so violent that she even fights neighbours with objects at the slightest provocation. She was sent packing from her former place of residence on Jimoh Aigbe Street, which is just some few streets away from here when she injured her landlady with a knife.”

Corroborating Modinatu’s claims, Alexander Akinnurun, the Proprietor of Alex Group of Schools, Ijegun, the school Seubow attended before his death, described her as a troublemaker.

He said, “She has been perpetrating those acts for quite some time now and reports of her heinous deeds abound. In June, Seubow who happened to be one of my pupils came to school with a disfigured face and wounds on his body.

“I was so moved by this that I reported the incident to the police. I don’t know how far the police went with the matter but I never expected that such an ugly incident would still repeat itself.”

When our correspondent visited the area on Monday, it was learnt that she had been arrested by the police.

It was also learnt Iya Anu was a serial divorcee and is at present with her third husband.

When contacted on the phone, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ngozi Braide, said she could not reach the Divisional Police Officer of Isheri Oshun.

“I can’t independently confirm the incident for now as the phone number of the DPO of the station is not available. I will get back to you as soon as I get through to him,” she said.

Why I nearly sliced my child into two —28-year-old mother

  Joy Ekulu

What could make a mother attempt to knife her own child after the father of the child refused to transfer the upkeep of the child to her? KOLA OYELERE writes.

IT started well for both Thomas and his then girlfriend, Joy Ekulu, in Katsina Ala, Benue State, where they both hailed from. After a short relationship, they got engaged and started living as husband and wife. Their union was later blessed with a child, a boy named Innocent.

However, after about three years of marriage, things fell apart, and the marriage broke down, leading to separation between the two, with Thomas heading to Kano for pastures green while Joy stayed in Katsina Ala.

The union hit the rock when after three years of the union, Thomas still refused to take necessary steps to formalise their union, one of which is the payment of Joy’s pride price. Joy added that her plea fell on deaf ears of Thomas, so she decided to separate from him since he would not marry her, while the child was in Thomas’s custody.

While Thomas secured the upkeep of innocent, Joy maintained contact with Thomas by sending money to her husband as part of her contributions to the upkeep of Innocent.

According to Joy, the money she was sending to Thomas for the upkeep of their son was not being judiciously used, hence the reason she felt that she should be allowed to keep the custody of Innocent. She also noted that rather than use the money for Innocent’s welfare, Thomas diverted the money to another venture, a situation she said infuriated her.

She then decided to visit Kano and bring Innocent to Katsina–Ala, where she resides.

On reaching Kano, where her ex-husband resides, she told him her mission and demanded for the child to be given to her. But her ex-husband declined. Perhaps, he must have said that the child was principally his and not hers. After so much appeal, Thomas still bluntly refused to release Innocent to Joy, 28.

And without wasting too much time, Joy did the unthinkable. He took a knife, grabbed Innocent and attempted to cut the boy’s intestine. But the boy was rescued and policemen were alerted. So, Joy became a visitor of the Kano State Police Command, where she was first detained and now facing interrogation for the reason she tried to take the life of her own child.

Speaking with journalists at a press conference on the incident, Kano State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, said a 28-year-old woman, Miss Joy Ekulu, who stabbed her biological son in the stomach in an attempt to divide the boy into two parts, was arrested.

According to him, Miss Ekulu admitted that she actually committed the said offence because she wanted to divide the boy to two equal parts for her and the father of the child.

Speaking on the the beginning of their problem, Joy said, ‘I got engaged to Thomas 11 years ago and we lived together as husband and wife for about three years before God eventually blessed our union. When the marriage was three years old, I told my husband to let us meet my parents and pay the bride price which would certify us as couple but he refused.”

She, however, said that she was full of regret after realising what she had done. “I didn’t know that it would not be easy. The intestine of Innocent was about coming out before people within the vicinity came out to rescue him. I regret causing unnecessary harm to my child because I didn’t know it would result into this situation. What followed was that I found myself in the police custody and right now, I don’t know what will be the end of the matter.”

The question many people are now asking is, was Joy Ekulu sane when he did the unthinkable act of attempting to take the life of her own son? As it is now, there is the likelihood that a mental test would be conducted on Joy to ascertain her mental state. It is then that people will be able to say whether her act was intentional or not.

Family of Nine Die in Bizarre Circumstances

There was palpable confusion Sunday morning in Umuakuru, Emekuku, Owerri North local council area of Imo State, following the unexplained death of nine persons in their sleep.

When Vanguard visited the scene at about 8.30am on Sunday, seven of the dead were clustered in one room while the lifeless bodies of an unidentified woman and her friend were found in the second room.

Vanguard investigations equally revealed that the nine dead persons, including the only son of the family, Paschal Njoku, his wife, Juliana and their five children, were home to bury their mother, Felicia Njoku last Saturday, but none survived to tell the story.

Narrating what she could remember to Vanguard at the scene of the ugly incident, the second daughter of the family, Kate, gave the names of the deceased citizens as Paschal Njoku, Mrs. Juliana Njoku, Ebere Njoku, Jackline Njoku, Ifunanya Njoku, Uchechi Njoku and Chy-boy Njoku.

While saying that Mrs. Christiana Uba and one of her unidentified friends that accompanied her to the funeral, died in the incident, Kate also lamented that villagers only woke up Sunday to behold a morbid spectacle.

Speaking also, an inlaw to the Njokus, Mr. Ogbonna Awuzie, recalled with grief that Paschal and members of his family went on self exile to Owerri because of what he termed “the persistent threat to their lives by one of their relations” (names withheld).

“Paschal and members of his family were given sanctuary in Umuodu, Owerri, in the past one year due to serious threat to his life and property. He only went home to bury his mother last Saturday and by Sunday morning we were told that they all died in very mysterious circumstances”, Awuzie recounted with grief.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Obi-Njoku, who spoke to Vanguard at the scene, described the incident as “a huge loss and indeed a calamity but I have advised that a post mortem examination be carried out to ascertain the cause of death”.

The situation however became fully charged when a truck load of youths from yet to be identifies town stormed the rural village, started shooting into the air and smashed the windscreens of cars parked at the scene.

Some of the sympathizers lost valuable personal effects in their bid to scamper into safety, while the policemen and Emekuku youths regrouped to match force with force.

As at the time of going to press, one boy from the camp of the invading youths was captured, beaten mercilessly and was  interrogated with a view to ascertaining who their sponsor was.

Meanwhile, the remains of the dead were still lying in the rooms at about 11.30am when Vanguard left Umuakuru, Emekuku.

Punishment or what! - Woman Roasts Six-year-old Stepson’s p*n**s For Wetting Bed

A woman in Abuakwa near Kumasi, Ghana, has done the unthinkable by gruesomely setting the p*n**s of a six year-old boy on fire, severely injuring the young lad in the process.

Cecilia Menaba, 23, allegedly set the p*n**s of her stepson, Prince Yona Menaba on fire in their room, a week ago. Young Yona Menaba, reportedly suffered his ordeal because he wet the bed the previous night. The heartless stepmother therefore decided to set his p*n**s on fire so he would not wet the bed again.
Police in Abuakwa were informed about the case but met the woman’s absence when they visited her home to arrest her about four days ago.

A police source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they have seen a picture of the bruises suffered by the young boy. According to the source, a reporter of Kessben Fm, Mallam Yahaya who had got wind of the incident lodged a complaint with the police.

He noted the suspect was however tipped off about the police visit to her home and has allegedly fled the house with the victim. Narrating the genesis of the matter on Kessben Fm’s Breaking News programme, Mallam Yahaya said someone in the suspect’s house informed him about the matter.

He said the young boy was staying with the stepmother, noting the victim’s father, a driver by profession, was staying in Accra briefly.

According to him, the boy’s real mother is staying at Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo region. He alleged that the stepmother had been maltreating the boy as she usually starved him to the chagrin of other residents in the compound house.

On that fateful day, the young boy was said to have wet the bed the previous night whilst asleep. The ‘wicked’ stepmother who was annoyed about it decided to teach him a bitter lesson. Fugitive Cecilia then lit a piece of paper with a match stick which she placed on the tip of the young boy’s p*n**s.

Young Prince cried out on top of his voice, begging for mercy but his pleas fell on deaf ears as the ‘wicked’ stepmother burnt his sexual organ.

Meanwhile, the police source said they were tracking the suspect who is believed to be hiding at Gyakye Ahenkro with the boy.

Tragedy: Senator, State Assembly Leader Shot Dead By Gunmen In Plateau State

Muslim herdsmen have killed a federal senator and a state lawmaker in troubled Plateau state on Sunday after attended a mass burial for the victims of an earlier attack.

The Senator representing Plateau North Dr Gyang Dantong and Majority Leader of Plateau House of Assembly Hon. Gyang Fulani were killed on Sunday while attending the mass burial of villagers killed on Saturday by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The Pam Ayuba,  spokesman for the Plateau state’s governor confirming the incident said  the senator representing Plateau north, Gyang Dantong, and the majority leader of the state assembly, Gyang Fulani and others were gunned down today Sunday by Fulani herdsmen,”

He added that the two were killed shortly after attending the mass burial for the victims of a Saturday raid, also blamed on the Fulani, a tribe made up of Muslim herdsmen.

After the burial, the officials went to a reception at the home of another local leader in the state’s Gashis district, roughly 90 kilometres (56 miles) from the capital Jos, Ayuba said.

“The Fulani herdsmen raided the house…they shot (the politicians) and some others but the key people who lost their lives are the senator and the majority leader,” he explained, saying he did not know the total number of casualties.

Another federal lawmaker “escaped death by a whisker,” he added.

Asked about the motivation for the attacks, Ayuba said the Fulani were likely inspired by their resentment for the state’s Christian political leadership.

The two victims of the Sunday attack were members of the mostly Christian Birom ethnic group, as were the 23 people killed in the Saturday raid.

Iyabo Obasanjo's Firm Benefits From Secret Oil Deals

A company owned by a daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo is among the beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s recent secret allocations of prize oil blocks, Daily Trust investigations show.

Findings reveal that All Grace Energy, in which Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello has majority stake, got the oil block Ubima Creek field OML 17 in a discretional process without competitive bidding.
Some oil companies and industry experts said the secret allocations are against international best practices.

Daily Trust learnt that the secret allocations were done over the past one year, even though government had said the process of awarding oil licences were to be executed publicly through competitive bidding.

A newspaper report recently said All Grace Energy is among companies that benefitted from the deals.

Records made available to Daily Trust by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) revealed that Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello is the major shareholder of All Grace Energy, which was registered on July 12, 2006 with N30 million share capital.

Mrs Obasanjo-Bello has six million shares, followed by other directors/shareholders: Abe Magnus Ngei (2 million), Mrs Abiri Dorcas (3 million), Dr. Adenikinju Adeola (3 million), Ugbeya Donatus (1 million), Alabi Yekini (1 million) and Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi (1 million).

The company was registered “to operate marginal fields for the purpose of producing petroleum, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas etc,” and has filed annual returns only up to 2007, according to CAC records.

Apparently reacting to the recent report that oil blocks were awarded illegally, Director of the Department of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Osten Olorunsola, said at a conference in Houston, United States, that the president is empowered by law to make such allocations.

This development flies in the face of the Federal Government’s consistent pledges to conduct fresh oil bid round. The last public oil bid was conducted during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime.

In 2010, for instance, Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke said government was trying to “sort out some issues” surrounding the previous bid rounds before it starts fresh ones.

Instead, the government apparently resorted to secret allocation of choice oil blocks to companies belonging to cronies, family members and associates, industry analysts say.

A player in the oil industry, who craved for anonymity, told Daily Trust the government’s action would discourage competition among indigenous oil operators and also send wrong signals to international investors.

A source at DPR said that the process of awarding the oil blocks to Iyabo actually started during Obasanjo’s administration but “a disagreement between Shell and DPR over the area to farm-out couldn’t be reached until recently when the Malabu oil block deal was sealed between the Federal Government and the multinationals.”

Oil block deal conditions not met

When our reporter contacted the spokesperson for the DPR, Mrs Belema Osibodu, she did not confirm or deny that Iyabo’s company was given the oil block but said the marginal fields were awarded based on some conditions.

She said the conditions included the development/execution of a public private partnership (PPP) model for three pilot projects under the small scale gas utilisation scheme.

Under this arrangement, Osibodu said, a gas-fired power plant of not less than 5mw shall be dedicated to supply electricity to Ubima community of Rivers State; an LPG extraction plant shall be installed as part of gas processing facility; and a part of the produced liquefied petroleum gas shall be designated for domestic use and support of small scale industry in the community.

But when a Daily Trust reporter visited Ubima community in Ikwerre local government area, there was no indication that such project was being executed. The community happens to be the country home of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

The chairman of Ubima community, Elder Daniel Anwuzurike, told Daily Trust that the community has been living without electricity supply for the past three months.

Anwuzurike said he was not aware of any power project going on in the Ubima community.

‘Secret oil block deals going on for long’

The controversial oil field is considered under “marginal oil fields” which the Petroleum Act (Amended) 1996 defines as “such field as the President may, from time to time, identify as a marginal field.”

The law provides that the holder of an OML can farm out (lease out) any marginal field which lies within the Oil Mining Lease (OML).

Also, the president may cause the farm-out of a marginal field which has been left unattended for a period of not less than 10 years from the date of the first discovery of the marginal field.

Reverend David Ugolor, Executive Director, African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), said this was not the first time such secret allocation of oil blocks was done by a president.

“In any case, the development contravenes global best practice of open competitive bidding and as such should be discouraged,” Ugolor said. “Nigerians are also kept in the dark as to how much accrued to the country from the exercise. The unresolved regulatory issues has not allowed potential investors, both local and international, to make huge financial commitment in the sector. Nigeria is losing huge resources from the dwindling investment in the sector and there is also loss of potential revenue from royalties,” he added.

Ifeayi Izeze, an Abuja-based consultant on strategy and communication, said the controversies surrounding the delay in passage of the Petroleum Industry Reform Bill (PIB) could be blamed for the delay/shifting date for the 2012 oil bloc bid round.

When Daily Trust contacted the spokesman for the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Mr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, he said it is not the responsibility of NEITI to decide how oil bid rounds will be conducted.

He however added that NEITI expects to be invited to observe the process in line with provisions of the law.

Three Killed, 30 Vehicles Burnt In Yoruba-Hausa Clash

A bloody clash between some Hausa and Yoruba in Ibese, Yewa North Local Government of Ogun State on Wednesday claimed the lives of three persons and left no fewer than 30 vehicles burnt.

Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the crisis on Thursday, learnt that the violent clash between the members of the two ethnic groups began on Wednesday night following a disagreement between two unidentified men over a commercial sex worker.

The violence was said to have later escalated and became an inter-tribal crisis.

About 25 articulated vehicles, three cars and five motorcycles were said to have been destroyed in the violence. Also, almost all the shops in the nearby market were reportedly looted.

Residents of the busy town were said to have fled the community.

Armed policemen were deployed in the troubled town to forestall further break down of law and order while an Armoured Personnel Carrier was seen stationed in front of the Dangote Cement Factory located within the community.

The Chairman of the task force in the affected market, Sikirulah Akinsola, confirmed to newsmen that the violence erupted due to a disagreement between two persons over a commercial sex worker.

Akinsola, who also doubles as the Bada Orile of Ijako Village, a suburb of the town, said more than 200 persons of Yoruba extraction who felt aggrieved by the alleged killing of their kinsman had decided to demonstrate on the streets when the crisis erupted.

According to him, one Kehinde had also allegedly been killed last May by a suspected Hausa man in the town.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the incident, but said no one was killed.

Adejobi, an assistant superintendent of police however said the violence in the town had nothing to do with ethnicity.

He said, “It was caused by a prostitute and some of the drivers had a problem with some men who claimed to be Ibese indigenes. There was no ethnic colouration. There was no casualty and only 14 vehicles were burnt.”

.....A top official of the Red Cross, Professor Charles Ohiku, made the startling revelation in an exclusive interview with Sunday Sun in Lagos. Prof Ohiku, who led the Red Cross rescue team at the crash scene, said that unlike the recent Dana plane crash, no human skull was found at the scene of the Bellview crash because it was blown up.
“I headed the rescue team at the Bellview plane crash site at Lisa, Ogun State. That plane was blown. That is why the probe report can never come out till tomorrow.  “That plane didn’t just drop from the sky. By the time we got there the following morning, we could not find even one human head

He continued: “Why have they not released the black box findings? They will not do so even till tomorrow. And you all know the personalities in that plane. One of them was Waziri Mohammed, chairman of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) then. Majority

Nigeria wins African Athletics Championship

Nigeria has regained the leadership of Africa’s athletics by winning 10 gold, six silver and five bronze medals at the just concluded 18th African Athletics Championship in Port Novo.

Kenya came second with nine gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals, while South Africa, the 2008 champions came third with six gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals.

Nigeria set a total of three championships and one African record in the five-day competition with Vivian Chukwuemeka, setting a new African, national and championship record of 18.86m for shot put.

The shot put Queen, who is also a Commonwealth champion, toppled her 17.60m record which was set in Tunis in 2002, when she was crowned African champion for the first time.

Blessing Okagbare also erased Chioma Ajunwa’s 6.78m record with a new 6.96m record while the women’s 4x400m relay team erased the 3:29.26 record set by the quartet of Shade Abugan, Margaret Etim, Bukola Abogunloko and Ajoke Odumosu two years ago in Nairobi.

The victory of Nigeria’s men and women’s relay teams in the 4x400m race on Sunday, heralded Nigerian’s return to the summit of African athletics.

The women’s 1600 relay set the tone for an intriguing finish with a new championships record of 3:28.77 to beat Botswana led by individual 400m winner and reigning world champion, Amantle Montsho.

The quartet of Salihu Issah,Amaechi Morton,Abiola Onakoya and anchor-leg runner, Saul Weigopwa picked the gold with a new 3:02.39 seconds record to put Nigeria on top of the medals table 12 years after it last enjoyed that privilege in Dakar, Senegal.

Earlier, sprinters Gloria Asumnu and Lawretta Ozoh had won the gold and silver medals in the 200m with the former winning a photo-finish race with both athletes timed at 22.93 seconds.

In the men’s version, Noah Akwu made a surprise incursion into the medals arena by winning the bronze (20.83 seconds) in a race won by Cote d’Ivoire’s Ben Meite Youssef (20.62 seconds) who made up for his disqualification in the 100m.
